Dear Representative, I'm writing to urge you to support the Filter First legislative package (Senate Bills 184 and 185) that requires the installation of water filters in Michigan schools and daycares. The bills passed out of the Senate on September 20th 35-1 and are now in the Regulatory Reform Committee. I urge you to support the bills should they move to the House Floor During the lame duck session. Lead in drinking water is an issue that threatens the health of children across Michigan. The bipartisan Filter First legislation would ensure kids have safe water to drink through a comprehensive program to install filters on drinking and cooking water sources in schools and childcare centers. Certified filters have been proven to be effective at reducing lead released into water as it travels through pipes, fixtures, and fittings. Additionally, filter installation is a cost-effective solution in the long-term as it reduces the number of drinking water sources that need to be monitored and encourages students to use reusable water bottles. While more research needs to be done, some filters have also been proven effective at filtering out long-chain PFAS and other contaminants. This legislation is supported by doctors, learning disabilities advocates, environmental groups, civil rights organizations, and more. All Michigan children should have safe water to drink. As these bills come before the House, I urge you to swiftly move forward with this important legislation to protect kids across Michigan. Thank you for your consideration.
