We applaud the EPA and Biden Administration for taking a strong step forward to address heavy-duty vehicle pollution driving climate change. However, the EPA needs to move quickly and finalize the strongest possible clean truck standards to address the climate crisis by the end of the year.
In April 2023, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its proposed rule to reduce emissions from heavy-duty vehicles. Trucks make up less than 10 percent of vehicles on the road but spew most hazardous air pollutants, including 63% of NOx pollution.
In order to meet federal climate goals and get to net zero by 2050, the EPA must set the strongest possible climate pollution reduction targets. This includes the strongest standards already proposed by the EPA, if not stronger, and tighter limits on diesel vehicle pollution.
The market is moving quickly toward zero-pollution trucks, and truck manufacturers have committed to making their trucks cleaner over the next decade. We need the EPA standards to match that momentum and provide the market signal to support those commitments.
