Join us in urging our legislators to fix the unfair tax hike on EV and Hybrid drivers by supporting SB 593.
The Michigan legislature just passed a bill as part of its new road funding package that will unfairly increase fees for electric vehicle owners. This means that come January 2026, anyone with an EV will pay an additional $100 on their annual registration. Plug-in hybrid electric owners will pay an additional $50. After January 2026, Michigan will have the highest EV fees in the country.
The road funding taxes and fees levied on EVs are already higher than those levied on similar gas cars, according to analyses we and others have conducted. This is because EV drivers currently pay a $160 surcharge to make up for the road funding tax that gas drivers pay at the pump. But the $160 surcharge, along with higher regular registration fees, ends up being more than what drivers of a gas version of the same car pay in yearly taxes and fees. With the additional $100 surcharge coming in January, EV drivers will go from paying the $160 per year surcharge to a $260 per year surcharge — far surpassing what their gas counterparts pay. Raising the surcharge to $260 would unfairly penalize EV drivers even more than they are today.
The new EV fee increase unfairly punishes EV drivers and the legislature now needs to fix it. A bill has already been introduced in the Senate that would do that (SB 593,) but it will take a concerted effort to get it through both chambers in the legislature.
We need your help in taking action to help fix this unfair tax hike on EV drivers. Email your legislator now to share how you feel about the fee increase, and share your support for SB 593.
P.S. As a hedge against the fee hike now scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1, EV owners might want to consider paying their 2026 vehicle registration early, avoiding the $100 increase. This won’t solve the problem for the long-term, but could help to buy some time while the legislature considers a fix.
