Families want to know what's in their children's car seats!
Healthy Stuff recently surveyed 12 leading car seat companies on their corporate chemical policies and practices to help parents know which brands are most dedicated to keeping hazardous chemicals out of their children’s products. We found most car seat manufacturers are making advances toward eliminating hazardous chemicals from their products. But, they all lack a public Restricted Substances List (RSL). As well, most companies do not have a public chemical policy and only a few companies were found to have a public statement on chemicals.
Parents and families deserve to know what’s in the products in which their children sit and sleep (and sometimes sweat, drool, or eat). Children have frequent hand to mouth activity and are vulnerable to toxic chemicals due to their developing organs and immune systems.
Tell car seat makers: We want to know what’s in our children’s products!
Chemicals found in children’s car seats often include hazardous flame retardants that can cause reproductive and neurological harm and fluorinated stain guards that can build up in the liver and kidneys and cause cancer. Exposure to these chemicals in car seats can happen through inhalation, ingestion, or even skin contact.
Most children’s car seat companies don’t have easily accessible, public information regarding chemicals of concern.
The report, Making the Grade; How children's car seat manufacturers measure up on chemical policy and transparency, highlights the need for transparency about the chemicals used in car seats today.
We urge car seat companies to create policies that exclude hazardous chemicals from all their products and to make these policies publicly available.
Join us in calling on car seat makers to let us know what’s in our children’s products!
